A 34-year-old Dutch photographer, Dick Van Duijn, captured this picture-perfect moment of a squirrel stopping to smell a daisy. He traveled all the way from Austria, Vienna to photograph ground squirrels and after two hours of patience, his efforts paid off.
It took him over 200 shots before he finally captured the moment. While he was on the job, the news of him being on the field spread among other squirrels who decided to pay him a visit. The unquenching curiosity of the squad of squirrels made it extremely difficult for him to focus on the shoot. However, with a great deal of patience, he captured a series of photographs of a squirrel smelling a flower.
The first of the photos show the squirrel curiously scanning the flower. In the second photo, he draws his face closer to the flower, just like a human would do. Then, he was seen closing his eyes to take in the divine scent of the daisy.
Van Dujin explained that he was extremely happy and satisfied with this once-in-a-lifetime shot. His photographs went viral among people almost immediately. People were so amazed by this simple interaction of a mammal with the environment. He believes that this popularity is partly because the modern person is disconnected from nature.
“When people are reminded about how beautiful and cute nature can be, they’ll feel better about themselves and the world around them,” Van Dujin said.
#4 After Taking In The Smell Of The Daisy, The Squirrel Even Took A Nibble Of It
He hopes that his photographs have reminded people of the saintly beauty of nature. There are other pictures of ground squirrels interacting with tulips and dandelions.
“Nature is endless,” the photographer said. Likewise, there is an endless number of subjects for his photographs. Though he can’t photograph everything out there, it is his life’s inspiration.
